Life and Works
What to write if you keep running around and do not stop for a single moment? If only the world of art was an Empire of Elves in latex outfits… They would look so sophisticated during any excess that no one could reproach them for theatricality and pathos. You would wish to squeeze blueberry juice out of a statue. You would wish to express everything in one go, uncompromisingly, in the reverse flow of time. You would like to take a leap and catch the Universe by the toe, shake it up a bit, wind it up and spread it again like a blanket to make your Sunday picnic on. It is dolce vita, but down to the bone. Life is works. What more would you say? No need to describe anything at length, as it is certainly going to be smashing. Do you care for a curatorial analysis? The installation of Matyáš Chochola casts the impression of a ritual environment, a sort of mythologized entirety of the current times, in which the banal Word Art shapes are bestowed with the same importance as antique busts. The Project for the Kostka Gallery, which at the same time is the author’s diploma work at Vladimír Skrepl Studio, Prague Academy of Fine Arts, represents certain summary of Chochola’s inter-media approach to art, an imaginary dividing line and at the same time an opening into a new creative field. The exhibition pays tribute to the process of origination. Even if no live event is currently taking place, the space evokes something happening. During the author’s performances it becomes the stage for a postmodern native music, a melting kiln for statues made of clay, that challenge the Divine aspect of creativity per se, a scenery for total exertion and transformation of energy from an idea into the solid matter and back. The resulting work balances along the boundaries of extravaganza and minimized forms. With some elements, such as the marble imitation technique, the author freely refers to historic architectural styles, while other aspects of the exhibition reshape the aesthetics of contemporary music festivals. Chochola thus creates an eccentric Theatrum Mundi, known for its pomp, evasiveness and deliberation.

I wrote this text for you out of my sincere friendship, while on a bus to Kladno, at the time when you were taking the Prague subway from one end to the other. Karina

Matyáš Chochola
(CZ, 1986)is a multiform artist. Primarily a sculptor bringing forth installations, essentially characterized by the use of antagonistic forms displayed through an extensive range of different materials. He invents compositions where the curve goes along with the geometric shape, where abstract forms mix with everyday life objects, creating as a whole a harmonic chaos. He also distinguished himself as a performer and, mix-media photographer and video / film maker.

Besides studying at the Vladimír Skrepl studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, he spent parts of his studies at academies in Poland, Austria, and Germany. Last year he studied in the Universität der Kunste in Berlin. In 2012, he won the Václav Chad Award/VI in Zlín's Youth Salon. His work has been exhibited in Italy, Germany and in various galleries around Czech Republic.
