25 YEARS OF FREEDOM

Ke Sklárně 3213/15, Praha MeetFactory

4. 6. 18:00

On June 4, 1989 Poland held the first democratic elections in the Eastern Bloc. For the first time since 1939, the inhabitantsof Central Europe got an opportunity to express their views freely. The overwhelming demonstration of solidarity meant thatthe communist regime in Poland was no longer sustainable. In autumn of the same year, Hungary, East Germany, and Czechoslovakia followed in their neighbor’s footsteps.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of this important historic event. In contemplating the context of the situation in which these events occurred, we are reminded of events currently taking place beyond our borders, where freedom is being taken for granted. Therefore, we not only remember, but also realize the relevance of the issue. The event happening in the center of Prague at MeetFactory, 25 Years of Freedom, asks the question: What does Freedom mean to you?  A special happening will be taking place, and under the artistic direction of David Cerny and others, the attendees will have the opportunity to express in words and images the answer to this question.

Following the happening, a concert will take place, which will be the first time "neighboring" bands, SBB (PL) and Buty (CZ), have performed together.

Both bands began their musical careers while under communism, and continue to attract generations of loyal fans on both sides of the border.
An evening dedicated to the topic of freedom in the past, present and future will be accompanied by an exhibition of posters Way We Are Poles 1989-2014.

The exhibition is a sometimes joyful, sometimes bitterly ironic summary, of what the gift of freedom has meant over the past quarter of a century.
