A peel, a skin, a coating. Simply surface. Our language has its own opinion when it comes to surface. Something is “superficial”, someone glides over the surface of things, we have to go under the surface when we want to be thorough and want to hit the nail on the head. Even for the pathologist it's important to do the autopsy and not to settle for superficial findings of our skin. Surface is, indeed, a big topic in contemporary painting. Its structure, imprint and texture are vital means of expression. From the informel period up until abstract expressionism, it's meaning shifted from a field for a honest gesture to a more sophisticated game. We could call it the politics of surface. It's innocence is long gone and it became rather a conflict of cultural signs and art history references rather than a personal fight of a painter for impressive expression.You can find several approaches to surface in contemporary painting on this exhibition.
