“I needed to capture it all before it goes away, before the kids grow up and it’s too late. Life passes you by in the blink of an eye. It goes by so fast.”

The hills of Iceland, the ocean, and the country’s endless roads winding through the landscape form the backdrop for Hlynur Pálmason’s fourth feature film – this time about the silent disappearance of love and a marriage falling apart. The film The Love That Remains follows a family of five and their dog as they lead a completely ordinary life in a small Icelandic town. Normal people, normal feelings, ordinary little things. Dog baths, hikes, snow, frozen fish, rubber boots, the seasons, orcas, summer dresses.

Pálmason captures a year in the life of a family as the parents navigate their separation. Through intimate vignettes and strange occurrences, the film explores the complexities of family, love, and the impact of shared memories. The main reason to see the film is clear: Panda, the dog, won the Palm Dog Award at Cannes for best canine performance for her role of a family sheepdog.

This film is presented in collaboration with KVIFF.TV.
