Claire Breukel

In 2003 and 2004 Claire Breukel co-curated the 2002 Cape Town Month of Photography biennale and the Brett Kebble Art Awards. Introduced to Miami through the Rubell Family Collection, she took the position of Executive Director at Locust Projects, a renowned alternative non-profit. Following this she became nomadic in her role as Coordinator of PUMAVision and Curator of PUMA.Creative, focusing on developing the arts specifically within Africa and the Caribbean region. She writes for Arte Aldia, Eikon, ArtPulse, Wynwood magazine and, and has curated exhibitions in Cape Town, Miami, New York, Vienna and San Salvador. Currently, Claire works independently between New York and Miami on special projects for (RED), and as Curator of Unscripted, Bal Harbour Public Art Commission. In 2014 she was named Chief Curator of MARTE Contemporary at the MARTE Museum in San Salvador, El Salvador.

Claire is interested in contemporary art that falls outside of conventional modes of exhibition, and often affiliated with emerging economies. Her work investigates the rupture of social norms as well as the (re)invention of paradigms of social interaction and behavior.

The residency of Claire Breukel is co-organised by Lucie Drdova Gallery and kindly supported by the Czech Centers.
