Gili Avissar

Artist Statement

At the age of 6 my parents took me to a fashion show, and I was mesmerized. The performative presence of the models was glamourous and confident, and contrasted my own insecure demeanor. The clothes had a fantastic element to them that transcended practicality and everyday life. I was fascinated by the intersection between reality and fantasy, private and public, identity and masquerade, and I decided that I wanted to become a fashion designer. Later on, when I attended fashion school, I realized that my motivation and craft are more abstract than the will to create a mass produced clothing item. This led me to the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, where I felt much more at home. There, I created objects that had no purpose other than expression and communication. Nevertheless, the performativity, the queerness, and the body image that are inherent to fashion, remain crucial to my work.
