Ina Smits

Ina Smits made an airport check-in counter catering especially for albinos. In her view, albinos are symbols of over-exposure. “In Africa, albinos are currently killed in large numbers because of the widespread belief that their bones and skin bring good fortune. With this work of (performance)art, I created a check-in desk and a special airline company for albinos, Albina Air. Performing the role of stewardess, I gave these people a “way out”. By shipping them off into space I provide them with a safe place, a safe haven in space, unseen and in darkness. Nothing wrong with living in the shade. Simultaneously I also wanted to say something about the exaggerated importance of being famous and having to be noticed all of the time.”
