Jana Johanna Haeckel is a German art historian, curator and lecturer based in Brussels.
She studied art history, comparative literature and curatorial studies in Berlin, Paris and Duesseldorf and completed her PhD at the Lieven Gevaert Research Centre for Photography (UCL/KU Leuven) in 2016. She currently works as project director for the cultural department of the Goethe Institut Brussels and teaches at the design department of University of Applied Science and Art Dortmund. Her fields of research are contemporary art, visual culture and media studies, with a focus on postcolonial and feminist theory. A main research interest lies in the deeper understanding of the historical, political and philosophical meaning and effects of images, aiming on a critical reflection on visual representation and documentation strategies.
Jana J. Haeckel has worked for several public and private art institutions, such as Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen (2012), Boros collection Berlin (2009-2012) and Kleine Humboldt Galerie, Berlin (2010-2012). She recently curated a solo show with Bianca Baldi (Superdeals Brussels, 2018) and the group show “Performing the Border” (Kunstraum Niederoesterreich Vienna, 2017) and writes regularly for various international art journals.
