“You chose total freedom but you got total loneliness. The time comes when, if you go on, you destroy yourself.”
Homeless and lawless. In winter, a young woman is found frozen to death in a ditch in the south of France. Through the memories of people who crossed paths with Mona, we trace her final weeks and piece together her life. Casual relationships are part of who she is; she does not become emotionally involved with the world around her but rather acts as a catalyst, a provoker of self-reflection. The seemingly improvised mosaic of memories and situations fits together with incredible precision, creating not just a portrait of an individual on the margins of society but also a compelling image of the woman herself and a completely unusual view of the southern French landscape.
Cult director Agnès Varda, a pioneer of the French New Wave, offers no direct answers but encourages viewers to ask themselves how far they themselves would be willing and able to go. The lead actress, Sandrine Bonnaire, who won a César Award for her performance, plays a key role in the impact of this seemingly improvised cinematic collage.
